Marcus: Clara, please just talk to me for one second! Don't walk out over a misunderstanding!
Clara: This isn't a misunderstanding, Marcus. This is who you are, and I am entirely finished living with it.
Marcus: I only reacted that way because I care about you so much! Is it a crime to be protective?
Clara: There is a massive difference between being protective and acting like an unhinged jailer!
Clara paused at the threshold of the hallway, her hand resting firmly on the polished wood frame as she looked back at him with icy detachment.
Marcus: You can't just throw away three years of our lives over one argument!
Clara: You threw them away the moment you accused me of cheating without a single shred of actual proof.
Marcus: My business partner swore he saw you get into another man's car!
Clara: My car was at the mechanic shop! My colleague was simply giving me a polite ride back to my apartment after the late budget audit!
Marcus: Why didn't you text me and explain that right away?
Clara: Because every time my phone buzzes late at night, you interrogate me for an hour like a criminal on trial!
Marcus scrambled up from his knees on the marble floor, his expression desperate as he tried to block her path toward the front foyer.
Marcus: I'll change, Clara. I swear I'll go to counseling, I'll fix my temper—
Clara: You've promised to fix your temper five times before, Marcus. The only thing that changes is that your paranoia gets worse.
Marcus: If you walk out that door right now, don't expect me to ever take you back.
Clara: Trust me, Marcus, asking you to take me back is the absolute last thing on my mind.
Marcus clenched his fists at his sides, a flash of his old arrogant anger momentarily cutting through his desperate plea.
Marcus: You think you'll survive out there on your own? You live in my house, Clara!
Clara: I pay half the mortgage, Marcus, and my name is on the property deed right alongside yours.
Marcus: My father funded the down payment! Without my family, you'd still be renting a tiny studio downtown!
Clara: And there it is. The real truth finally comes out.
Clara let out a cold, humorless laugh, shaking her head as she looked down at the man she had planned to spend her life with.
Clara: You never saw me as an equal partner. You always viewed me as a charity case living in your shadow.
Marcus: That's not what I meant, Clara, you're twisting my words!
Clara: No, Marcus, for the first time all morning, your words were entirely honest. And they make my decision to leave infinitely easier.
Marcus reached out a trembling hand to grab her wrist, but Clara stepped back sharply, avoiding his touch entirely.
